Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such medications must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
